The Mothers’ Union was founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner in the village of Old Alresford in Hampshire, where her husband, George Sumner was a rector or the priest in charge. The Mothers’ Union in Kenya was started in 1918 at All Saints Cathedral amongst the European ladies who came with their husbands during the colonial era. In 1956, the first African ladies were enrolled as members in Mwongoiya Church in the Central Province when there was the only one Diocese of Mombasa. The Mothers’ Union has now spread in all our 40 Dioceses.
The Mission Statement of the Mothers’ Union
The Mothers’ Union is a Christian organization in the Anglican Church which promotes the well-being of families worldwide.
They achieve the mission statement by:
a) Developing prayer and spiritual growth in families.
b) Studying and reflecting on family life and marriage and its place in society.
c) Resourcing our members to take practical action to improve conditions for families both nationally and in the communities in which they live.
Purpose of Mothers’ Union
The purpose of Mothers’ Union is to be specifically concerned with all that strengthens and preserves marriage and Christian family life.
The Aim of the Mothers’ Union
The aim of the Mothers’ Union is to the advancement of the Christian religion in the sphere of marriage and family life. )
The Objectives of the Mothers’ Union
There are five objectives which help the Mothers’ Union department to carry out and strengthen the aim. These are:-
a) To uphold Christ’s teaching on the nature of marriage and promote its wider understanding.
b) To encourage parents to bring up their children in the faith and life of the Church.
c) To maintain a worldwide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service.
d) To promote conditions in society favorable to family life and the protection of children.
e) To help those whose family life has met with adversity
