M.U History

The Mothers’ Union was founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner in the village of Old Alresford in Hampshire, where her husband, George Sumner was a rector or the priest in charge. The Mothers’ Union in Kenya was started in 1918 at All Saints Cathedral amongst the European ladies who came with their husbands during the colonial era. In 1956, the first African ladies were enrolled as members in Mwongoiya Church in the Central Province when there was the only one Diocese of Mombasa. The Mothers’ Union has now spread in all our 40 Dioceses.
